Matta x Meredith Mashup

A Meeting of the Minds, Exclusive for Substack

Over the weekend, Buckingham Palace announced that they had finalized a review of over 1000 royal patronages. The review was launched following the death of Queen Elizabeth II to “examine the charities and bodies to which she, Charles, and his wife Queen Camilla were connected, either as a president or patron.”

Before her death, Queen Elizabeth was patron of 492 organizations, so these had to be shuffled around. Also among that number were the royal patronages previously held by Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Prince Andrew, which were returned to the Queen in 2020 and 2022, as well as a small number held by Prince Philip.

Seems like some pretty straightforward royal news, right? Well, depending on where this review is being covered, you might have some very different conclusions. Is it a positive for the Monarchy? A travesty? And what questions aren’t being asked?

In the first of a NEW video offering exclusively for Substack, Meredith (meredithconstant.substack.com) and I have put our heads (and different methods of analysis) together to discuss this news story. Follow along as we pull threads and weave in historical context to get a clearer picture of the royal media landscape.
