Why does Meghan need to "earn" her happiness?

It’s a question worth asking, because even in 2025, public discourse around her success and joy remains nothing short of bizarre. Every time Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, steps out smiling, every time she dares to exist without looking visibly burdened by the weight of public disapproval…the response is a predictable chorus of outrage.

How dare she be happy? What has she done to deserve it?

To that I would say….because she can, and absolutely nothing. That’s kind of the point of a monarchy. It’s completely the opposite of a meritocracy.

But to many, seeing Meghan—a mixed race American actress and working mom—reap the benefits of monarchy and a titled class system is jarring. So today, let’s unpack the reasons why (for what I feel is the 857th time in my career).

And to be clear, this says more about Meghan’s critics than it does about her.

“She acts so entitled.”

From Merriam Webbster: en·ti·tled (adjective) - having a right to certain benefits or privileges, or given a specified title expressing their rank, office, or character.

This is a word that often gets hurled at Meghan as an insult, but let's pause here and consider that she is quite literally entitled to her current situation.
